The city of dreams, formerly known as Bombay or today’s Mumbai was given by Portuguese as a dowry to Charles II of England when he married Catherine de Braganza. Mumbai, named after the local deity, Mumba Devi, located on the Island of Salsette, off the west coast of Maharashtra, is said to be an amalgamation of seven islands namely, Colaba, Mahim, Mazgaon, Parel, Worli, Girgaun and Dongri,in the year 1862.

The present day Mumbai is one of the most populous cities of India, with an estimate of 20 million as per the last census.It also has been tagged as one of

the world's most populous cities.

Mumbai, being the financial hub as well as entertainment capital of India, is filled with activities all the year. Being the city of Bollywood, Mumbai has seen the growth and rise of many stars and actors from all over the country. One can find va rious important financial institutions, like the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), the corporate headquarters of many Indian companies, the biggest of industries and the largest of slums in Mumbai.

Mumbai, being a cosmopolitan city, is said to be fine blend of various communities and cultures. This combination can be found in its cuisine, history and architectural landmarks which is both Victorian as well as Indian.  While visiting Mumbai, one must try to discover the popular beaches, hills and caves.

For those who are interested in shopping, can check out the shops at Kalbadevi and Bhuleshwar, Crawford market, Zaveri Bazaar and Chor Bazaar. The Vada Pav found on common food stalls in streets, Bhelpuri on the Chowpatty is enjoyed in the same way, as the pizza is enjoyed in any of the fast food restaurants. The balloon sellers, pigeon feeds and buggy rides are very common in the evenings at Mumbai.

Air: Mumbai has an international airport. Most of the international airlines, along with Indian Airlines operate flights to Mumbai from various parts of the world, as well as India.

 
Rail: Mumbai is the headquarters of the Central and Western Railways. It is connected with all major cities like Ahmadabad, Aurangabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Calcutta, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Madras, Nagpur and Trivandrum.

Road: Mumbai is connected by good motorable roads with all major tourist centers.
